Dear Ocean

I’m so sorry.

I’m sorry that we’ve taken you for granted. I am sorry for the oil spills, the pollution and all of the plastic.

I’m sorry for the destruction and devastation created by our greed and ignorance. More than anything, I’m sorry for all of the life we’ve taken from you.

My whole life you have been my lifeblood and my sanctuary, and now you offer the same to my children.

Not only do my family and I find our home within you, but you are home to over 2.2 million different species of life. You give them oxygen, food, shelter, and a safe place to live and be free – and I want to do more to help you protect them.

So I would like to make you this promise.

I promise to think of you each time I consider using plastic. I promise to help more people understand the importance of keeping fish off their plates. I promise to leave nothing behind when I spend time with you, and help others do the same. I promise to not take you for granted and help others do the same.

I know that when you die, we die too.

I’m working on being better. And I believe many others are too. I’m hopeful that soon we will go back to honouring you, loving you, and protecting you, as you have done for us for generations. It starts with the first step.

If trees are the lungs of our planet, then water is its blood. You are in me, above me, and far below me — or as Rumi said: “Unable to perceive the shape of You, I find You all around me. For You are everywhere.”

With love,

Tammy Fry
